The first leaders debate threw up a clear winner in Nick Clegg.
I think he was spot on when he said some issues are bigger than party politics, like elderly care provision and the pension time bomb. These issues are so important that the parties need to stop playing party politics with them and agree a policy they can all sign up to.
The problem I see is that if the Lib Dems were in government, it would not take long before the thirst for power meant they reverted to using party politics to keep power.
That is why I believe parliament will benefit from a minority of independent MPs that are not seeking to form a government but are there to ensure the difficult issues are tackled and that co-operation between the parties is facilitated and legislation is scrutinised.
